As children, we are encouraged to dream on a creative grand scale, because the possibilities are endless. Dressing up as fairytale characters, daydreaming, singing nursery rhymes and pondering life as a grownup are all part of a healthy childhood.
However, as adults the life once dreamt about often becomes a distant memory, because unconsciously people push those long-held dreams aside for more pressing matters. Suddenly, we’re paying bills, holding down jobs, having children of our own, experiencing pressure from friends/family to conform, and getting stressed about responsibilities.
The sad thing is, many people give up on their dreams because they are “too busy” or allow negative people to stop them in their tracks. As valid as they are, these commitments tend to get in the way of the dreams initially imagined, so resentment starts to kick in because they feel unfulfilled.
For anyone who has given up on their dreams to conform in life or succumbed to the negative views of others, a beautiful quote from Gail Devers, 3-time Olympic Gold Champion offers inspiration: “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”
Fortunately, regardless of your age, background and what’s going on in your life, anyone can make that step towards pursuing a dream, no matter how big or small. Once a firm decision has been made, a person can change their situation at any point in their life by re-focusing their thoughts toward positive, uplifting pursuits and affirming to themselves that they wish for their dreams to take precedence. Granted, a few sacrifices may need to be made during the busy throws of life, but if it’s really worth it, you’ll know in your heart that you’re doing the right thing. And, if someone really has the desire and the self-belief, then no one and nothing in this world can take another person’s aspirations from them or stand in their way.
From the Devers quote above, the word ‘determination’ screams volumes in so many ways. Being determined always puts a person in good stead to never stop dreaming. Dreamers keep on dreaming, as that’s what keeps them going. And, as for those negative people and situations that attempt to stop dreamers in their tracks? Well, they only make dreamers stronger, because these naysayers present a valuable test to see how determined and dedicated a person really is towards fulfilling their aspirations.
Whilst not all dreams become a reality, the infinite source within you always takes you to where you’re meant to be in the end, because as the Dalai Lama puts it: “Not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.” It may just take you somewhere else much more rewarding.
So, the moral of the story is to believe in yourself, stay determined with a clear vision of what you want to achieve, and keep on moving towards your dream with your head held high!
